This program provides an excellent opportunity for those who wish to deepen their understanding and experience of Buddhism through a systematic study of five subjects fo Mayahana Buddhism, which includes meditation, discussion & text memorisation. Foundation Program is offered at KMC Taiwan. If you are interested to join or have a trial, please contact the Education Program Coordinator epc@meditationtw.org.

What do we study?

Six subjects are studied, based on the following texts by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche. These focus on Buddha’s Sutra teachings in an accessible and practical manner. ◦    Stages of the Path to Enlightenment (Lamrim), based on Joyful Path of Good Fortune ◦    Training the Mind, based on Universal Compassion  ◦    Training the Mind based on Eight Steps to Happiness ◦    The Heart Sutra, based on Heart of Wisdom ◦    Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life, based on Meaningful to Behold ◦    Understanding the Mind, based on the book of the same name.

What is the structure?Taking-notes

The secret of the Foundation Program’s success lies in the manageable commitment and clear structure of study. The classes are divided into terms, with plenty of breaks between each term. Students sign up for a section to study part of a text and undertake to keep the following commitments to the best of their ability: – to attend every class – to memorize the relevant material – to attend one puja (chanted prayer) each week – to take a test at the end of the year – to volunteer some help with running the Centre

What happens at a class?

Prior to class, students study an assigned portion of the text, usually a few pages long, and to memorize the essential points. The class begins with chanted prayers and guided meditation. The teacher then reads the assigned selection from the book while giving commentary to the text. The students then divide into pairs to discuss the material. The teacher and students conclude by deciding what to meditate on in the next class and how to practice during the coming week.
